‘Tis the season for all things sparkly and shiny to reign supreme! Every year around this time the stores seem full of sequins, shimmer and all things luxurious. Some people aren’t into it, but I find it fun to play around with when I have the chance.
In the past few years (no surprise to readers of the blog) I’ve come to favor more neutral looks, and my holiday outfit above is a reflection of that. Still festive and a touch sparkly, but not over the top. All black can still be interesting and seasonally appropriate with the right outfit.
I try to avoid buying a dress or other article of clothing just for one event. Aside from your wedding day, I prefer to own pieces that will get more than just one use and won’t just be cast aside. A metallic or sequined item may not make it to weekly rotation in your wardrobe, but it can still be re-purposed throughout the holiday season.
One of my favorite tricks for that is layering a dress under a skirt. This look is actually a full sequined dress with an a-line skirt over top. I’ve worn the dress alone to holiday parties in the past, but this look still features the neckline which is my favorite part. You can do the same thing if you have multiple parties to go to but (like me) don’t want to invest in a new look for each one. My dress happens to have a chiffon belt that wraps around so I just tied that over the waistband of the skirt and just like that – new dress.
One of my favorite ways to top a party dress is still with a leather jacket. Wear it draped over your shoulders to feel extra fancy. With the metal details on the jacket and the sequins, I don’t need much more than a simple silver necklace to finish off the outfit.
Now to figure out what to do NYE…
